Main Research Area Digitization in Production and Services

One of the two interdisciplinary main research areas at the university is digitization in production and services. This incorporates a variety of cross-faculty and interdisciplinary research activities from the fields of technology, economics and design. Research is being carried out on the challenges that go hand in hand with an increasingly digitized living and working environment.

The main research area digitization in production and services primarily focuses on the following fields of competence:

Field of Competence: Digital Value Creation

The main goal of all economic companies is to create value. In service provision processes, added value is generated and the customer is prepared to pay an appropriate price for this added value. Digital value creation generates added value from data and information that is created in new digital networks and then evaluated. Processes in old value creation models are optimized and new business models are evaluated.

Secure acquisition, storage and analysis of data
Evaluation and development of business models
Analysis of digital change in lines of business and value creation networks
Use of the new data situation for target-oriented process controlling

Digital value creation refers to the use of data for new business models. This also includes areas such as production processes, manufacturing or service production.

Field of Competence: Industrial Internet

The production industry is currently undergoing fundamental change due to Industry 4.0. Production plants are complex technical systems that are becoming even more interconnected due to digitization.

IT security refers to the protection of digital systems against attacks affecting privacy, integrity and availability. As a result of increasing digitization and networking in the age of Industry 4.0, the relationship between IT security and functional safety is becoming increasingly important.

The balance between the supply and demand of electricity poses a significant challenge for energy transformation. Digitization plays a key role in solutions that deal with the challenges of decentralization, flexibilization and the efficient use of energy.

Field of Competence: Production and Automation

The digitization of production and automation goes hand in hand with the company-internal and cross-company networking of production facilities and relevant control elements, as well as advancements in automation and the opportunities these advancements provide. This offers new potential for intelligent, extremely efficient and customer-oriented industrial production. However, it can be quite challenging for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in particular, to unlock this potential.
