All students in Germany must have health insurance for enrollment, and, international students, for applying for a residence permit.

Some private domestic and foreign health insurance policies from other countries may be recognized in Germany. We recommend that you inquire about further details with your health insurance provider.

If recognized, you need a confirmation about the exemption from public health insurance coverage from a German statutory health insurance provider. You are free to choose the German insurance company. Notice that once this confirmation is issued, you cannot change to German statutory health insurance.

If the private domestic or foreign health insurance policy is not recognized in Germany, you must sign up for coverage in Germany. In this case, you can choose the provider among German private or statutory health insurance or specialized travel insurance.

Of course, you can contact the International Office for support.

Notice that there are special terms if you are an EU citizen, acitizen of the European Economic Area (EEA), or Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom:

With the insurance of your home country, you can get a free European Health Insurance Card, EHIC, which covers your health insurance in Germany.
