How and when do you actually start writing a paper? What does academic writing mean? Is it allowed to write in the first-person form?
Writing is complex, especially in a foreign language in which other conventions apply. In this course you will practice writing in different situations relevant to you at the university, e.g. in e-mail communication, in written examinations and seminar papers and also in your final thesis. We will deal intensively with your own writing products and the organization of the writing process. You will also get to know some basic writing strategies and written language structures and use them in your own texts.
You will mainly work with your own texts, revise and comment on other texts etc. So you are welcome to bring your own ideas and "writing projects" to the course.
Learning goals:
- using central linguistic means of scientific communication: quoting, paraphrasing, arguing, summarizing, etc.
- revising your own writing products
- describing diagrams, graphics, models etc. in writing
- commenting and expressing opinions in written texts
- giving an overview of the contents, writing an introduction and transitional phrases
