Use of SMILe software in SPIZ study

The SMILe software components developed at THA_ias, which were already an important component in studies at the University Hospital Freiburg and the University Hospital Basel, are being used in another research project. In the SPIZ project, a large G-BA-funded consortium project in Saxony, a new care model after CAR-T stem cell transplantation is being tested. This project also involves cooperation with XITASO/Planfox, which is responsible for operating the software at the university hospitals in Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz.

Together with the University Medical Centre Freiburg, the University Hospital Basel and the Institute of Nursing Sciences at the University of Basel, Augsburg University of Applied Sciences has developed the digital aftercare model "SMILe" to address the needs of patients following stem cell transplants. This programme combines digital and human support in a customised way and also takes into account ethical aspects of digitalisation in the healthcare sector. The e-health platform of the aftercare solution is developed and operated by PLANFOX, the healthcare division of XITASO. Around 30,000 people worldwide receive a stem cell transplant every year, which is often accompanied by severe side effects.

The SPIZ project aims to develop a structured aftercare concept for patients who have received innovative cell therapies for blood cancer. This concept includes care by onco-nurses, video consultations, a health app for self-monitoring and information on treatment. Case managers will coordinate follow-up treatment. The study will include 300 patients, half of whom will receive the new aftercare concept. The researchers are investigating the effects on care, mortality, complications and quality of life, as well as acceptance and potential cost savings. If successful, the concept could be rolled out across Germany.
