Project description

The production industry has the potential to make a significant contribution to the transition towards a more sustainable future. Given the pressing nature and growing popularity of this topic, a considerable number of producing companies have already implemented sustainability goals. Nevertheless, at the operational level, decisions are still largely driven by economic considerations. This is due to a lack of understanding of the interrelationship between sustainability and production logistics objectives and the absence of a set of standardized indicators to quantify measures towards a more sustainable production. To address these points, this paper analyzes which aspects of sustainability can be influenced by production planning and control (PPC) and how these aspects interact with the traditional goals of production logistics. Moreover, key performance indicators (KPIs) are proposed as means of measuring improvements in these sustainability aspects. The integration of these KPIs into the target system of PPC allows for the optimization of production systems towards an operational point that reconciles production logistics and sustainability objectives. This, in turn, facilitates the future-proofing of the production industry.
